CommuniCoin Project: Laying the foundation

Innovation Week is underway! With big goals to engage the community, and better capture the value of these interactions, we couldn’t be more excited to see the CommuniCoin project come to life.

With nuanced projects like these, a clear strategy is important to ensure it stays on track, and the intended outcomes come to fruition. For the CommuniCoin project, this meant aligning on the decision-making requirements (i.e. inputs, stakeholders, change management and consensus) , and consistently maintaining the goals of the project.

With this in mind, a three-layered framework was developed by the advisory group made up of active players in Calgary’s tech community:

  1. The top human layer focuses on the community actions that were either most important to incentivize, or already taking place in the community. The committee also looked at the community principles and guidelines, utilizing Rainforest Alberta’s Social Contract as a guide.

  2. The second layer covers the decision making processes. These are based on research from previous projects, as well as the input of the advisory committee. This layer was key in solidifying the structure of the project, and nailing down relevant use cases.

  3. The final layer was defining the CommuniCoins – how and when they will be used, their value (non-monetary), and how they can support the above layers. what parameters exist. In the case of this project, Innovation Week attendees will be able to collect limited edition coins either by attending key events during the week, participating in networking opportunities, or providing feedback to improve the community and programming.

By establishing this foundation, it can help inform similar projects going forward – with the goal of decentralizing knowledge and communal value, shifting initiatives like these into the hands of the community can inform what’s next, in terms of programming, support, and collaboration, for the Calgary ecosystem.
